A Significant Moment as Rosenior Overcomes Obstacles

"Rosenior represents a quality manager who understands the game inside out, which is the most important thing.

"However, in my role as Chelsea's pioneering black player, I would be lying to claim this appointment doesn't move me."

These were the sentiments of the former Chelsea winger, the man who made his groundbreaking debut for Chelsea's senior side off the bench in April 1982.

This week, Chelsea hired RC Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior, aged 41, to be their next manager following the departure of manager Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are within a Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned ownership group which also controls Chelsea.

There have been just twelve of African or Caribbean heritage managers – not including those in temporary caretaker roles – in the Premier League since it began thirty-four in the past.

"One thing that impresses me about Liam is he grew up and played not far from here, he knows this community," continued Canoville.

"When kids see a figure like Rosenior managing the team they support, a person they can identify with, who's from their ends, who comes from a family that champions what's right… that's profound demonstrating that opportunities exist.

"Indeed, it is an enormous step for Chelsea, for London, for all young person with big dreams.

"But right now? We must support Rosenior, give him the necessary tools, and let the man do his work."

What Do the Data Indicate?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit became Chelsea head coach in 1996 thereby becoming the Premier League's first black head coach.

Twelve years later, by 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the first English black boss in the top flight after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo is the only other present top flight gaffer of colour.

The shortage of ethnic minority managers throughout English football is matched by an absence of diversity in the boardroom.

As per the BFP 2023's study, forty-three percent of Premier League footballers are from black backgrounds.

Yet, research by the equality organization found only 3.2 percent of board and senior leadership positions across 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are from minority ethnic backgrounds.

Regarding first-team coaching level, according to figures from eleven clubs, the percentage stands at 2%.

Across all coaching roles – including head coaches – from those same 11 clubs, the figure is five percent.

"He has undoubtedly broken barriers in terms of him being announced as the Chelsea manager, and as an organization, we want to see more of that," said the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"We know that there exists a wealth of talent that exists within black and underrepresented groups... aspiring coaches desire a chance to demonstrate what they can do. It is imperative to continue to work hard to dismantle those obstacles down."

Furthermore, Rosenior will become the fourth permanent English head coaches currently in the Premier League – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe as well as Scott Parker – a number that lags behind Europe's other major divisions in terms of homegrown representation.

16 of the 20 top-flight managers in Serie A are Italian, Eleven in La Liga are Spanish, Twelve of the 18 are German while Ten in Ligue 1 are French.

The present Blues caretaker manager Calum McFarlane commented: "I have no doubt every young English coaches with a youth development pedigree are, in some way regardless of allegiance, supporting Liam.

"It's truly inspirational to young English academy coaches to see someone get such a role with his background and everyone hopes he does really well."

'Let's not forget – he's there due to ability'

His father, Leroy, Rosenior Sr., played for clubs such as West London clubs, West Ham as well as Queens Park Rangers, and his managerial career peaked with a five-month stint in charge of the third-tier club Brentford FC back in 2006.

In 2019, he was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire in that year's 2019 New Year Honours for his services to tackling discrimination in football and wider society.

After Liam hung up his boots he pursued his father's footsteps. He began penning articles for a national newspaper, where in 2017 he addressed the lack of diversity of black coaches. He pointed out that race does not determine coaching skill arguing that roles should be given based on qualification.

He further expressed a point he would repeat: how significant lack of diversity leads to a failure to understand regarding footballers from different ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

In a podcast with The Athletic FC, Rosenior highlighted how his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "difficult" or "emotional", but said he could relate to the Netherlands international with Nigerian parentage. Emegha is set to join him in moving from France to Chelsea this summer.

In further newspaper articles, he also confessed to being "ashamed" to hear an unnamed coach make a homophobic slur. He pledged support for the Premier League's Rainbow Laces campaign and authored a public message to the former US President during his first US presidency, accusing him of "blatant" prejudice.

Rosenior has since built his reputation in the dugout – first at Hull City, then Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney recently stating he was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" following their time together with Derby.

The manager bid goodbye to his former club on Tuesday morning before signing a six‑and‑a‑half‑year contract with the Blues.

The Blues boasted the top flight's pioneering black manager with Gullit as well as the first black skipper named Paul Elliott.

Elliott has since worked in multiple executive roles, among them the FA's diversity and inclusion board|
